Empowerment by Way of Maternal Consciousness
My art challenges hierarchical notions in the art world that dismiss maternal consciousness. My intent is to challenge these labels of art that exclude work by women. There are several ways I address this issue in my art. The use of patterning connects me to the traditionally women's heritage of pattern making, drawing connections with both physical and social behaviors. Choosing materials and techniques that have been labeled "craft" as opposed to "fine" is another way in which I test hierarchical notions. Utilization of the grid in my art is a way to confront the notions as well.
The framework from which I come as an artist is based on liberal feminist theory. I define feminism as a viewpoint of people wherein everyone is recognized as equal regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc. For me, feminism is not necessarily about women only. It is an awareness and consideration for the social and economic injustices of the world and a commitment to end these. Although I celebrate women's uniqueness and distinguish them from men, especially mothers, I do not necessarily with to displace the patriarchal power struggle, but rather seek to join it. I hope to displace the hierarchy, (the set of rules, norms, patterns, observed rituals), that exists in the art world.
From a philosophical point of view my intention is very much aimed at challenging the notion among artists that to be a successful artist you must abide by the unspoken rules that create the hierarchical system in art (you must creat art that fits the taught definition of "fine art"). I also inspire to empower other mother-artists by depicting the joys, as well as the struggles, that come with balancing the roles of mother and artist.
